Today we’d like to introduce you to Myesha Thompson.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
WellBalanced started with the desire to help and educate people. I talked about it for years with my friends but needed to figure out where to start. I relocated to KCMO during the pandemic to begin my career. At the time, I only worked part-time and had a lot of free time. I would come home and write what I wanted to do with WellBalanced, what it would look like, and what my purpose was. After passing my personal training certification, I knew it was time to move. I had to swallow my anxiety and fear, trust my education, and lean into my passion, which led to where I am today. WellBalanced just celebrated 3 years, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for us.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? Absolutely not! I went to school for health care and wellness – I had no clue how to start or run a business. But that is the blessing of being around so many entrepreneurs and having family and friends in your corner who want to see you win! I took knowledge where offered, researched, and hired professionals when needed. I’m blessed to be in my position and have the support of so many of my peers. On top of learning how to run a business, I was a new trainer- there is so much to be learned there. Learning how health and fitness work is one thing, but applying it to clients is a different ball game! Each client is unique, with unique needs and varying levels of readiness. Learning to navigate the space is a continuous road.
We’ve been impressed with WellBalanced, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
I am a certified health education specialist and personal trainer. Many people ask, “What is a health education specialist?” and tell them in short, “I’m someone you want to see before you need to see a nurse before you need to go the doctor.” We work in many areas – gyms, employee wellness programs, public health settings, universities, hospitals, community centers, etc. The role of a health education specialist is to bridge that gap between your high school health class and your current state of health. When you go to the doctor, and she tells you, “You need to exercise more and eat healthier,” we are the ones that teach you the how, why, and what it looks like – behind their recommendations.
In this field, there are many avenues you can take. I chose to specialize in fitness and nutrition. Not only did the subject truly interest me, but during my studies in college, I learned how a balanced diet and regular exercise can prevent your doctor from diagnosing you with high blood pressure, heart problems, obesity, or another preventable condition. My clients always tell me, “I can see and hear the passion in your voice when you discuss these things.” Not only do I strive to educate those who come to me, but I’m sure to tailor what I am telling them to their lifestyle. Because feeling good, being healthy, and free of disease isn’t just a “get it quick” thing. It’s a lifestyle modification, and I’m here to help my clients through that journey.
What I’m most proud of, honestly, is my story—a little black girl from St. Louis who grew up and followed her passion. Since I was a little girl, I wanted to help people. I was surprised to learn I would own a health education business years later!
If you are in Kansas City and looking to make healthy changes this year, WellBalanced offers in-person training to help you reach your fitness and wellness goals. How do you define success?
I define my success by my happiness. When you work from a place of passion, you can fulfill so many dreams, goals, and desires that can aid in your happiness.
