Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Powers.

Hi Mikayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I got started in administrative roles 22+ years ago! Most recently, getting started in the virtual assistant industry in 2019. Key Kulture began small and is now a six-figure and growing virtual assistance agency and coaching business serving women business leaders/moms/entrepreneurs/small business owners throughout the United States. To get started, I combined my years of experience in various industries + serving a plethora of leaders (CEOs, vice presidents, directors (including an entire board of directors), managers, small business owners, entrepreneurs, etc.) matched with serving as a small business owner, entrepreneur myself, having owned a successful perfectly-rated luxury wedding planning business from home. Industries I have served: Foundation, piers, mud jacking, stained concrete, gutter systems, high-end construction (NARI award-winning kitchen and bathroom remodels), home medical equipment delivery and clinical support (COPD, sleep apnea, wound therapy, and more), retail, family medicine non-profit (advocacy, education, patient and practice care), event planning across 20+ annual events throughout the United States, home and business security, etc.). Opening my virtual assistant business allowed me to take everything I had learned thus far and apply those skills immediately to reap the benefits of entrepreneurship. Today, I still proudly serve clients throughout the United States with quality, value-first support in their personal and business endeavors.

Fun fact: I am still with my first client, and we will celebrate (5) years together in the Fall of 2024.

Through this journey, I have pivoted back and forth to hone in on my craft and how I wanted to impact the world. My business has transitioned from a virtual assistant agency, meaning I have other virtual assistants on my team who serve under my brand. I also coach other like-minded entrepreneurs to build and scale their virtual assistant businesses from home. Giving back to the community by teaching them ways to achieve balance in their personal and business lives is of the utmost importance to me. We get one life to live, and an integral part of that is ensuring that we have found balance and true happiness in how we spend our time personally and professionally.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am a perfectionist, so learning quickly how to navigate all the ins and outs of entrepreneurship while simultaneously showing myself grace has been paramount. Entrepreneurship takes work. As business leaders, we have important decisions and are faced with crucial conversations with internal and external partners. It is up to us to maintain integrity and value in all interactions. This may mean that we do have to make the tough decision to part ways with partners or provide constructive feedback to others healthily. It is all a part of the job – I embrace the challenges with enthusiasm and tact daily.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was the oldest child of three, and my siblings and parents looked to me for guidance and care. Personality-wise, I have matured beyond my years, striving to excel and reach the next level in business and life. I knew from a very young age that as a child, not everything may be in my control, but as an adult, I could live the life I have always dreamt of and claim that control back. Aside from general childhood interests, I was even more interested in protecting, helping, caring for, and serving others. This is a story for another day, but growing up in a home of domestic violence and alcohol abuse, I was always protecting others day in and day out. The ultimate win in all of this is that I learned from a young age what makes people tick, how to read body language, how to make quick decisions even amidst times of stress, and plan accordingly to be proactive in my endeavors versus reactive. Through this, I have helped others tap into the best versions of themselves by providing them with strategic solutions that help them lead an incredible legacy.
