Today we’d like to introduce you to Shahida Spann-Ryan.
Hi, Shahida. I am so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, and I became interested in holistic medicine at a very young age, especially trying to find ways to cure my horrible cystic acne. I moved to California and studied various healing modalities, from Western Herbalism to Midwifery and Massage Therapy. I eventually attended a four-year graduate program for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Cupping, etc.). I decided it was time to come home to Kansas, and I opened up Lawrence Acupuncture in 2014. Then, in 2019, I opened up Mud & Lotus: Outdoor Soaking Tub and Sauna behind my acupuncture clinic. It features a cute zen garden in downtown Lawrence, with a cedar mineral soaking hot tub and barrel near-infrared cedar sauna. We now offer various treatments, including massages, mud masks, acupuncture, and more. I love offering healthy, fun options to the downtown Lawrence scene and serving my community!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s challenging being a woman business owner in many ways. I also expanded right before the pandemic, so that was rough. Managing employees in this competitive job market is also definitely a challenge. Creativity and thinking outside the box are essential to keep my doors open and thriving.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Lawrence Acupuncture LLC?
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is just an incredible holistic medical approach that tries to treat the root cause of a problem and not the “branch” or symptom. I specialize in treating pain (neck pain, shoulder pain, migraines, etc) as well as hormonal imbalances and fertility concerns. Many people suffer from common health issues and don’t realize that there could be an all-natural way to fix the problem by promoting healing in both (rather than just masking symptoms). I focus on giving great acupuncture treatments and offering lifestyle and diet suggestions, posture or stretching exercises, herbal and supplement recommendations, and even functional medicine lab work so that we address the main issues of concern from every angle. I also love doing facial cosmetic treatments, such as microneedling, an all-natural way to stimulate collagen production strongly. Since acne and skin problems got me into holistic medicine, I love helping patients with skin issues such as acne, acne scarring, vitiligo, age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and rosacea can all be improved with microneedling.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Sticking with it for the long haul has helped me. I’ve wanted to give up many times, but I have always tried to stay committed to my brand company and original vision. Also, growing, slowing, and maxing out small spaces has allowed me to survive the lean times.
