Today we’d like to introduce you to Lilia Bubeck.
Hi Lilia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a passion for art. As a child, I loved creating and illustrating my own stories in my notebook. My grandparents painted in their free time, and seeing their work inspired me to continue with my passion as I got older. I was active in my small town’s art club in high school. I competed in competitions and received various awards for my work. I even had my first art show as a senior in Chanute, KS. My art slowed down in college as I was so focused on school and work. In 2020, the pandemic happened, and I was stuck at home. I had much free time and decided to pick up the paintbrush and gouache again and begin painting. I had always wanted to sell my work, but I was nervous. I had never sold my work before and needed to figure out where to begin. With the encouragement of family and friends, I leaped and signed up for my first art booth. I received much love from the Kansas City community and other local artists. This boosted my confidence and helped me to continue my journey of showcasing my art. It makes me happy to see others enjoying my work and being able to give them a piece of my art to add to their homes.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every journey has difficulties. I have learned a lot from other artists and vendors that have helped me succeed in my journey. I have been lucky to receive tips from different vendors and artists on marketing myself, advice on art shows, and recommendations to other local art fairs. A lot of my struggles come from my anxiety and nervousness, but with the help of those close to me, I have found ways to manage these feelings.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My favorite medium to work in is gouache. Gouache is like an opaque watercolor that you can build on. Most of the artwork you see on my social media is in that medium. I love creating bright and vibrant work; gouache’s features allow me to build on that. Most of my artwork is based on nature, as I love animals and plants. Sometimes, I challenge myself by painting portraits or still lifes. It is important to challenge myself by painting things out of my comfort zone, so now and then, you will see me post something diverse on social media. What sets me apart from others is that I am always painting something different, from creating vibrant pieces of animals to more dark-inspired pieces.
